It’s a New Year! Happy 2012! The tides of change in the event industry likely won’t slow in 2012. Here are 3 forces likely to continue impacting the event business.

“Green” Events

Sustainability within the event industry has become all the rage in recent years; this trend isn’t likely to slow in 2012. Late last year, The Convention Industry Council (CIC) approved the Apex/ASTM Environmentally Sustainable Meeting Standards. These standards set in place the first internationally accepted guidelines across the event industry for green events.

Near Field Communications and QR Codes

My prediction that QR codes would cease to exist following substantive Google’s departure from the technology has proved false. Both QR codes and Near Field Communication will likely continue to grow in use at events and conferences in 2012. Both technologies will be utilized to track visitor attendance and engagement. To learn more about these technologies please read my previous article: NFC (Near Field Communication) the Next Big Thing For Events?

Mobile & Tablet platforms

In 2012 expect further development of the mobile-tablet ecosystem. I foresee mobile and tablet devices being utilized more frequently for presentations, particularly slide shows. I also predict additional interoperability between projectors and mobile phones/tablets.
